Review of the Vogue Accessories glove pattern V0667/V7949

This ladies glove pattern looks a little freaky from the photos on the front, but can be sized for ladies with glove sizes of 7-9.  The glove pattern itself, pieces 17, 18, 19 and 22 can be used to create a period pair of gloves.  As gloves were an integral part of a ladies wardrobe since the 14th century, it is always great to find a pattern that does not require a bunch of fiddling to fit.

To change the pattern to resemble the period glove pattern as seen on the gloves.org website under Duello, only requires one simple maneuver.  The forchettes/gussets in the Vogue pattern are flat and have a huge notch out of the center.  If one cuts out the piece (I recommend tracing onto a heavier paper first) and folds the flat into a V by matching the circles and pinning or taping.

Another thing that is included in the directions but is unnecessary is the addition of elastic on the inside wrist.  Don’t bother, the fit does not depend on this little addition.

Materials to use for period gloves.  Glove leather and wool felt.

To assemble the gloves, the directions call for machine sewing.  Unless you are extremely good at sharp corners in tight V’s I recommend hand sewing.  There are only 2 stitches that need to be used to create these gloves.  One is the overcast, see photo, and the other is the stab stitch.(see both together in the photos above)  The seam allowance is ONLY 1/8 inch.

When looking at the directions, they look a little daunting, but these are the only directions you need to make a period pair of gloves.

Start with the thumb piece.  With right sides together, fold each thumb (piece 18) in half lengthwise, having edges even.
Stitch, leaving lower edge open, as shown.

Turn right side out and press (unless you are using leather or felt.  Then just press it open with your fingers.

Pin thumb to front and back, matching symbols and having edges even: stitch.  Press seam toward front and back.

With right sides together, fold front and back sections in half lengthwise, having edges even.  Stitch index finger between small circle and
large circle.  Stitch remaining fingers between large circles and dots.  Start fourchettes from the pinky finger and work your way to the
index finger.  Unless you are left handed, then start from the index finger.  This is to keep the majority of the glove from getting in your way.

Pin fourchette sections to fingers, matching fourchette letters to corresponding fingers and matching symbols. Stitch, breaking stitching at
dots and large circles and easing in fullness where necessary (actually the pattern is pretty accurate.)

Pin Lower section 22 to front and back sections, matching squares, baste.  Stitch.  Press seam toward lower section.

Pin side edges of glove together; pin ends of lower section together.  Stitch in one continuous ¼ inch seam below large circle.

You are technically done if you are using felt.  If you want to put the long gauntlet on leather, you can line it.  Do this then now.

Ladies gloves in 16th century portraits seem to be a short gauntlet affair.  The gauntlet seems to be 1.5 inches in length, and many have fur gauntlets.

Now to a finished pair of gloves.
